HireVue interview practice with job-tailored questions

HireVue's public practice interview uses a fictitious company and a few sample questions to help candidates get familiar with the system. Your actual invitation may assess role-specific competencies. Practice for that.

What the real HireVue flow looks like

Your exact flow depends on the employer and role. HireVue's current candidate FAQ says most video-based assessments include five to eight questions and focus on job-specific competencies. Check your invitation for its timing and retry rules; a typical on-demand flow still follows this pressure pattern:

  1. You get an email invite with a deadline set by the employer.
  2. Each question appears on screen with a limited preparation window.
  3. Recording starts after preparation; every answer has a hard time limit.
  4. Follow the retry instructions in your invitation; if they are unclear, practise as if you get one take.
  5. Recruiters (and sometimes scoring models) review your recording later.

This simulator rehearses that same countdown-and-camera pressure while making the questions specific to the role you are applying for.

Common HireVue questions to practise on camera

No public list can predict an employer's exact questions. The useful preparation is to cover the recurring question types, then connect each answer to the job description:

  • Introduction: Tell me about yourself and why your background fits this role.
  • Motivation: Why this company, this team, and this position?
  • Behavioral: Describe a difficult problem, conflict, change, or deadline you handled.
  • Strengths and development: What do you do well, and what are you actively improving?
  • Situational: What would you do in a realistic customer, team, or priority conflict?

HireVue's own candidate guidance also recommends practising common questions on camera and using the STAR framework for behavioral answers. Read the official question guide.

The five mistakes recruiters see most

  • Burning prep time on panic — use the 30s to pick one story and tag its S-T-A-R beats, nothing else.
  • Answering a different question — behavioral questions probe one competency; check what's being asked before choosing your story.
  • No Result — answers that end at “what I did” without the outcome. Numbers stick; end with one.
  • Running the clock — a 90-second cap means a 60-75 second answer. Ending early beats getting cut off mid-sentence.
  • Reading notes off-screen — eye movement is obvious on camera. Bullet points memorized beat scripts read.

Fair-use note

This is an independent practice tool — not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to HireVue. It doesn't access HireVue systems, predict scoring, or guarantee outcomes. It trains the one thing that is fully in your control: performing well on camera under time pressure.
